Histological Studies on the Coronary Arteries and Their Main Branches

Abstract
Histological structures of the right and left coronary arteries and their main brarches were studied using 71 Korean hearts (Zero to 86 years) and also observed the regional intimal hypertrophy of the arteries.
The results obtained were as follows:
1. The subendothelial connective tissue fibers in the intima appeared at 1st month after birth in the left coronary arteries, 7th month in the right coronary arteries and 10th year in the right and left interventricular arteries. In general, the fibers increased with age.
2. The subendothelial smooth muscle fibers in the intima appeared at 4th month in the left coronary arteries, 10th month in right coronary arteries and 10th year in the left and right interventricular arteries. The smooth muscle fibers increased with age in general.
3. The lamination of internal elastic lamina in the intima appeared at 4th month in the left coronary arteries, 7th month in the right coronary arteries and 10th month in the left and right interventric¡©ular arteries. The lamellae and thickness of internal elastic lamina increased with age in general.
4. The smooth muscle, so-called a musculoelastic layer in the internal elastic lamina began to appear at 7th month in the left and right coronary arteries, 10th year in the left and right interventricular arteries. The fibers of smooth muscle and connective tissue in the internal elastic lamina increased in amount with age.
5. The smooth muscle in the media of the coronary arteries thickened with age in general, but most of the fibers became to atrophy and were irregular in arrangement from 45 years.
6. The elastic fibers in the media of the left and right coronary arteries were fine and loose until 30th year, but those were became more coarser and arranged in 6---10 lamellae in circular with irregul¡© arly branched and interrupted manner after 45th year.
7. The elastic fibers in the external elastic lamina of the left coronary arteries arranged in about 5 to 7 layers until 30 years of age and in 8-10 layers in the aged arteries over 45 years, those in which becam¡Æ coarser and wavy. The elastic fibers in the right coronary arteries showed more or less delayed differentiation. The external elastic lamina in left and right interventricular arteries began to appeared at 10th year and consisted of 5 to 7 layers of wavy and circular coarse fiber from 20th year.
8. The regional intimal hypertrophy of the left and right coronary arteries appeared as early as at 1-3th month and was observed in all cases after 10 years of age, while that of their two main branches appeared later and less markedly.
In general, the histological structures of the left coronary arteries developed more than highly those of the right coronary arteries and their aging changes were marked in the tunica intima.
